: How awkward is that shit going to be?
: "Hey, everybody! We have numerous divorces, Range Rovers that need transmissions fixed, and Malibu chalets we need to pay for, so please come watch us be awkward on stage, while pretending it's the best we can do!"
: Yay!
This is supposedly an interview w/ Rich from just 3 weeks ago (link included). Article dated Oct 22 but in comments guy gives date he supposedly did this as Oct 4.
Few interesting excerpts:
"...it wasn’t about anything but the music — playing live and writing songs that they wanted to play. No Snapchats or Instagram campaigns. THE MUSIC.
“That’s why we do it,” he said. “God knows what people like or gonna like. It’s incredibly fickle, and trying to write based on trying to get someone to like it is one of the most insincere ways that you can create art, in my opinion. It has to come from an authentic place; you have to really write from your experiences, what you’re doing, how you see the world, the places you’ve been, the people you’ve met. That’s what life is. And we write about that. Otherwise, what are we doing? Sell some toaster ovens. If you’re just here to sell s**t, then sell something you can manufacture that doesn’t take time to think about. Art is different. Art is here for a higher purpose in my mind.”
also....
"“We’re (Magpie) dudes on a stage playing music and playing our songs that we wrote and that we played on, and we’re out there as a unit of people trying to do what we do,” he said. “It’s not about me. It’s about this record and this band and what we can do, and that’s more of how I see it instead of trying to get some sort of weird notoriety or fame.”
With Steve's book in mind, Rich seeming to somewhat care when half the band quits in 97, etc... I would like to think that Rich is working as hard as he can on Chris with a real reunion.
I re-watched behind the music and Chris tells the 'Johnny quitting' story just as Steve told it. Chris says something to the affect of "Me...I'm like okay, next. Keep it moving. Hang the phone up" or however he stated it, he essentially says in that VH1 special that he could give a shit.
