About those riffs and trying to think more objectively ...maybe they didn’t fully materialize for Lions, but possibly Steve could have felt some power carried over from the Page shows to them playing as BC again
From Rich POV he might have felt this was a time (with Chris unfocused) to get a stronger hand in the band and wouldn’t want to lose that with Jimmy doing stuff
There is also possibility that Jimmy wasn’t all true in hos story. He seems to have a great memory and can talk in details about LZ stuff a long time ago. But he also said he was focused and sober when in the studio for In Through The Out Door. A swedish guy working in the studio then told me some very different stories about that. But looking back Jimmy has always tried to downplay and not talk about the drugs/booze part of LZ.
While I don’t doubt Steve’s stories, and he seems like a rational and logical person, there is the part of rock bands where you will always have a band member acting like a person from a different universe and it is Impossible to understand their logic (at least this is the feeling from my bands....and Spinal Tap). What Steve is saying is probably all true, and he cannot understand their logic, at least there will be parts of Chris / Rich stories that will add info and broaden the picture
